The last two years have been the most difficult for the Indian automotive market. Sales dropped dramatically, with no sales for an entire month across all brands. However, the market is making a strong comeback, with positive growth. Maruti takes the top four positions on the top ten list in 2021. Hyundai Creta surpasses Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza to become the fifth best-selling vehicle.
1) Maruti Suzuki Swift:
Maruti Suzuki recently updated the Swift with a new look and an efficient Dual-jet K12 engine. The Swift climbed to the top spot in H1 sales, with 97,312 units sold. The Maruti Suzuki Swift sold 9,180 units in October 2021, a 63 percent decrease from the 24,589 units sold in October 2020. Its MoM sales deserve special mention. When compared to 2,520 units sold in September 2021, sales increased by 264 percent on a month-over-month basis. The Swift range starts at Rs 5.73 lakh and goes up to Rs 8.40 lakh ex-showroom. 2) Maruti Suzuki Wagon:
The Wagon-R is the second car on the list and has been selling well. Maruti Suzuki sold 94,839 Wagon-Rs in the first half of 2021. Maruti Suzuki WagonR topped the sales list in November 2021, and it was the only model other than the Brezza to post positive sales. WagonR sales increased 4 percent year on year to 16,853 units, up from 16,256 in November 2020. It was also a 37% MoM sales increase over the 12,335 units sold in October 2021. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R starts at Rs 4.80 lakh and goes up to Rs 6.33 lakh ex-showroom.
3) Maruti Suzuki Baleno:
Maruti Suzuki Baleno is India’s best-selling premium hatchback, ranking third in H1 sales. Despite the lack of a diesel engine option, Maruti Suzuki sold over 93,823 Balenos. Although rivals such as the Tata Altroz and Hyundai i20 offer diesel engine options, the Baleno remains the segment leader. This year, Maruti Suzuki’s premium hatchback Baleno surpassed one million or ten lakh customers. Maruti Suzuki’s hatchback accounts for 25% of the company’s market share. 4) Maruti Alto:
Maruti Alto sales were 13,812 units in November 2021, a 10% decrease from the 15,321 units sold in November 2020. It was also a 21% MoM decline from the 17,389 units sold in October 2021. The price of Maruti Alto 800 starts at Rs. 3.15 Lakh and goes up to Rs. 4.82 Lakh. Maruti Alto 800 is offered in 8 variants – the base model of Alto 800 is STD and the top variant Maruti Alto 800 LXI Opt S-CNG comes at a price tag of Rs. 4.82 Lakh.
5) Hyundai Venue:
The Venue subcompact is the only Hyundai car that appeared on the list last month. With 10,554 units sold in October, it has risen two positions to enter the top five on the list. It represents a nearly 20% increase over the same period last year when Hyundai sold 8,828 Venue. In September, Hyundai sold 7,924 Venue SUVs. Hyundai Venue price starts at ₹ 6.99 Lakh and goes up to ₹ 11.85 Lakh. The price of the Petrol version for the Venue ranges between ₹ 6.99 Lakh – ₹ 11.85 Lakh and the price of the Diesel version for the Venue ranges between ₹ 9.52 Lakh – ₹ 11.80 Lakh.
6) Kia Seltos:
Hyundai Creta dropped out of the top ten list last month, finishing 13th overall, with sales dropping by more than half compared to October last year. Though not directly related, Creta’s loss appears to have translated into Seltos’ gain. Kia’s flagship SUV was the best-selling mid-size SUV in India last month, with 10,488 units sold. It represents a nearly 18 percent increase over Kia’s performance in October of last year when it sold 8,900 units. The price of Kia Seltos starts at Rs. 9.95 Lakh and goes up to Rs. 18.10 Lakh. Kia Seltos is offered in 18 variants – the base model of Seltos is HTE G and the top variant Kia Seltos X-Line AT D which comes at a price tag of Rs. 18.10 Lakh.
7) Tata Nexon:
The Nexon SUV is the second Tata car to appear on the list of the top ten cars sold in India last month. Nexon, one of the most under-appreciated SUVs in the subcompact segment, has grown in popularity over time and is now one of Tata’s best-selling models. Tata sold 10,096 Nexon units last month, up from 6,888 in October of last year. Tata has sold over 2 lakh Nexon SUVs in India since its launch in 2017. It is also one of India’s first cars to receive a five-star adult safety rating in a crash test conducted by Global NCAP. The price of Tata Nexon starts at Rs. 7.29 Lakh and goes up to Rs. 13.34 Lakh. Tata Nexon is offered in 40 variants – the base model of Nexon is XE and the top variant Tata Nexon XZA Plus (O) Dark Edition Diesel which comes at a price tag of Rs. 13.34 Lakh.
8) Tata Punch:
The next one on the list is the newly launched Tata Punch. It reported sales of 8,453 units in just two weeks of launch. The newly launched Tata Punch micro SUV was the second most popular Tata PV in November 2021. Last month’s sales reached 6,110 units, a 28 percent decrease from the 8,453 units sold in October 2021. Punch also made the list of the top 25 cars sold in the country last month, coming in 14th place. Tata Punch price starts at ₹ 5.49 Lakh and goes up to ₹ 9.39 Lakh. The price of the Petrol version for Punch ranges between ₹ 5.49 Lakh – ₹ 9.39 Lakh.
9) Maruti Vitara Brezza:
With 12,906 units sold in August 2021, the Vitara Brezza is the best-selling subcompact SUV. It maintains the largest market share of 23.95 percent, despite a minor 2.5 percent decline over 2020. Behind the Hyundai Venue and the Tata Nexon was the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. In November 10,760 units of it were sold. Priced between Rs 7,61,500 and Rs 11,10,500 (ex-showroom, New Delhi), the Vitara Brezza registered sales of 8,032 units in October 2021.
10) Mahindra XUV300:
It sold 4,005 units in November, maintaining the average of its monthly sales of around 4,000 units. It was the most popular Mahindra SUV that month, but it was still a long way behind the competition. Mahindra XUV300 price starts at ₹ 7.96 Lakh and goes up to ₹ 13.46 Lakh. The price of the Petrol version for XUV300 ranges between ₹ 7.96 Lakh – ₹ 12.64 Lakh and the price of the Diesel version for XUV300 ranges between ₹ 9.10 Lakh – ₹ 13.46 Lakh.
