Points to Check While Buying New Car

Buying new car is everyone’s dream, while choosing right car colour, right model, preparing documentations, often we make silly mistakes which leads to long lasting disappointments

here is point wise check list you should follow which buying new car,

Day-Time Inspection:

We strongly suggest you to take the delivery of your vehicle in the daylight hours. in evening hrs in absence of sunlight it will difficult for you to spot minor scratches or faults

Inspect before registration

Check and Ensure odometer cable is not disconnected as there is a possibility that the vehicle might have been used as a demo car. please do not wait till the time your vehicle has been registered in your name. As this would mean limited liability to the dealer and issues, if any, will be rectified only under the company warranty. Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to know the vehicle’s month and year of production. The Form-22 certificate from the dealer will reveal engine/chassis number, while the Road-Worthiness Certificate issued as part of Form 22 will have the month/year of manufacture.

Exterior inspection

Start the engine to check for unusual or rattling noises, Do a physical inspection of the vehicle carefully highlight if you find any damage, take a written confirmation from the dealer and ensure that it is fixed before the vehicle is delivered.

Interior inspection

check all lights should function properly, check the interior of the vehicle for any damage to the upholstery. usually dealer stockyards are a messy place. Hence, you need to thoroughly inspect the quality of the dashboard, seats, door pads and the floor carpet. Look for any visible signs of damage due to water seepage. The electronics, seat belts and glove box need to function as expected. The air conditioner should function normally 


Once you feel confident that the vehicle is perfect, now its time for you to focus on documentation process. Ensure that the VIN is the same as the one appearing on the bill of sale, registration certificate as well as on the finance or lease agreement. Check the insurance details and file receipts of all payments done towards registration and accessories. 

Check that the spare wheel is fresh. And that all related tools (spanner, jack etc.) are present, Ensure that the owner manual and the service booklet have been stamped by the dealer with correct details. It is important to note that high security number plates are to be mandatorily affixed before delivery of a new car in most cities. At the time of delivery, the vehicle will be handed over to you with tax receipts, registration copy, and pollution certificate along with a copy of the vehicle insurance. The hard copy of vehicle registration certificate is sent directly to your registered address within two months.

Take Along

  • Take along one of your friend/ acquaintance as they might also point out things that you have overlooked.
  • Take a camera or smartphone having good quality camera with you to capture photos of your shining brand new car and for the case you notice some defects.
  • We strongly recommend you to take a printed copy of the checklist for the Pre-delivery inspection.

Preparation summery:

  • Documentation: Ascertain that you carry any required documentation with you. This may include forms, receipts etc. 
  • Payments: If any payment formalities are to be completed, carry along the relevant PDC’s / Cash / Credit Cards. 
  • Third Person: It’s always a good idea to take a relative / friend along for suggestions, observations and comments. 
  • Confirm: the date of delivery with your dealership. It is best to go there only after the car has been prepared and is ready. If you have a preference for a particular day / time (for auspicious reasons), inform the sales person. 
  • Daylight: We recommend accepting delivery in broad daylight, since the dark can conceal a lot. You may also not get good service in the evening since dealership personnel are in a hurry to wrap the day up. 
  • Memories: Take a camera along. 
  • Gift: Take a token gift along for the sales guy. 

At the Showroom: 

  1. Demo: Part of the salesperson’s job is to acquaint you with your new car’s features and how each one operates. Ask him to demonstrate the car fully, and top to bottom, in order to understand how everything works on the vehicle. 
  2. Confirm that all the accessories you ordered are fitted on the car. 

Final Inspection:

  • Ensure that there is enough fuel in the car. At least to get you to the nearest petrol pump. 
  • Check that all lights and electric accessories are working fine. 
  • Confirm that all the accessories you ordered are fitted on the car. 
  • Check that the spare wheel is fresh. And that all related tools (spanner, jack etc.) are present. Are there wheel locks? If so, ensure that the lug key is there in the car. 
  • Wipers, floor matting, first-aid kit & hazard sign.  
  • Somehow, most new cars are delivered with over-inflated tyres by the showroom. Check the tyre pressure and make the necessary adjustments. 
  • All payment receipts.
