Citroën India has begun assembly of its first product for our market, the C5 Aircross SUV, Citroën announced earlier this year that the India launch of its C5 Aircross will be delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and will now happen sometime in January-March 2021, instead of late 2020. Here’s what’s new about it
The C5 Aircross will take on the likes of the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and Skoda Karoq. Measuring 4500 mm in length, the SUV boasts of a compact appearance with a wide grille up front and sleek looking split headlamp design complete with LED daytime running lights. The SUV also gets black lower body cladding for a rugged look. At the rear, the C5 Aircross gets flamboyant taillights with twin exhaust tips and a black bumper. There are roof rails added too for more practicality and butch appeal on the SUV.
Inside, the Citroen C5 Aircross SUV is a five-seater and comes with a host of creature comforts. The SUV gets a 12.3-inch TFT-digital instrument screen and gets 20 new-age driver assistance features including Highway Driver Assist, a level-two autonomous driving system, as well as six advanced connectivity technologies. Safety tech on the C5 Aircross includes multiple airbags, smart headlamps with an auto high beam feature, attention assist, cross-traffic detection, blind spot assist, hill-hold assist and more. The SUV also gets a digital instrument console.

What’s new on Citroen’s India-bound C5 Aircross SUV?

This news, which comes after a seemingly long gap from the house of Citroen, indicates that the car is getting ready for its formal arrival in the market. But please note that Citroen C5 Aircross SUV’s India launch will happen between January 2021 – March 2021. While test mules of the C5 Aircross SUVs have already been seen in India, those were fully-imported units.
Citroen C5 Aircross 2021: India launch and expected pricing?
Sources tell us that, since the C5 Aircross will be “locally assembled” and not “locally made”, prices are expected to start upwards of Rs 29 lakhs (ex-showroom).
The SUV will be sold in a single trim and is expected to come with features like an electronic parking brake, dual-zone climate control, a hands-free tailgate, split-LED headlamps with DRLs, a panoramic sunroof, a powered driver’s seat, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument screen.
The C5 Aircross 2020 SUV may be offered with either a choice between a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine. As for transmission options, the new Citroen car in India may be available with a choice between two options: A six-speed manual and an eight-speed torque converter automatic.
What else is Citroen planning for India?
Citroen doesn’t plan on selling large numbers of the C5 Aircross SUV in India SUV. Instead, the French brand is betting big on its future made-in-India models from its ‘C-Cubed’ programme, which should be the volume sellers. These models will have a high level of local content – the C21 compact SUV is expected to achieve 90% – 95% localisation, which could mean a starting price of about Rs 7 lakh.
How many Citroen India showrooms are expected in first phase?
The first showroom in Ahmedabad for the Citroen brand is almost ready. 10-15 outlets – all of which will be based on the brand’s ‘La Maison Citroen’ concept – are expected to be introduced in the first phase.
Citroen has begun trial production of the C5 Aircross at its Thiruvallur plant in Tamil Nadu. The C5 Aircross is a premium midsize SUV that will take on the likes of Skoda’s Karoq, Hyundai Tucson and the Jeep Compass. It’ll be sold in India via the CKD (completely knocked down) route. The C5 Aircross was expected to reach showrooms by mid-2020. However, the nationwide lockdown halted proceedings, pushing the launch of the upcoming SUV to early 2021. Prices for this upcoming SUV are expected to start from Rs 29 lakh (ex-showroom).
